Ellie is feeling more confident after talking about her incontinence. Are you still suffering in silence?
For a long time, Ellie felt too embarrassed to talk to her family or even her doctor about her incontinence. But her daughter noticed that she was starting to isolate herself and choosing not to leave home very often. For example, Ellie no longer volunteered to pick her grandchildren up from school. It was only when Ellie's daughter asked her if anything was the matter, that Ellie found the confidence to talk about her bladder weakness.
That conversation gave Ellie the courage to talk to her doctor as well. Today, Ellie wears pull-up pants that are ideal for her needs and she is living life to the full again.

Helen has learnt that drinking less, doesn't help incontinence. What misconceptions do you have?
Helen has been struggling with incontinence for a few years. To avoid urinary leaks, she tried drinking less. But after doing some research, she discovered that dehydration can actually make urinary incontinence worse.
If there is too little fluid intake, the bladder is not flushed out as well as it needs to be leading to bacteria accumulating faster in the kidneys, bladder, and urethra.
This increases the risk of bladder or urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Also, the urine produced is highly concentrated and can irritate the bladder making the need to go to the toilet and urinate increases. It's recommended to drink 1.5 to 2 litres of fluid a day. Water and tea are great choices.

When the leaks became more frequent, she decided to talk to her GP. He explained that she was experiencing stress incontinence, a weakening of the pelvic floor caused by hormonal changes during menopause. Following her doctor's advice, she started a an exercise regime to learn how to better control her pelvic floor. Marie now feels much better and can take up Yoga again, her favourite sport.
